The Best 5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Hour Every Day

Every year, on March 19th from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. we gather together to celebrate our one and only home.  But one hour a year surely isn’t enough to save the planet. The point of this one-hour of dedication to the Earth is to raise awareness and get everyone on board. And from there, we learn to extend those good habits to our daily life, and celebrate Earth Hour every day!

The state of our planet has never been this bad. Climate change is a real and serious threat. But just as collective irresponsibility caused it, if we join together, we can create positive change. The difficult bit is that we all have to join and we all have to make some fundamental shifts in our daily lives. This means from what we eat, to what we wear and how we get from one place to another.

So here are 5 ways to celebrate Earth Hour Day every day:

What we eat matters. This may put things in perspective: “animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction” (Cowspiracy). It takes far too many resources for us to have a glass of milk for example (something about 2 month’s worth of showering). Many of us may not be ready to go vegan or vegetarian, but the reality is that we need to seriously think about our consumption, and think about reducing meat and dairy.

Reduce your individual carbon footprint. There are many ways to do this, and one of the best ways is to start relying on public transport. Consider walking or cycling to work. Incorporate your daily transport with your exercise routine. Think about traveling with trains rather than flying when possible.

Reduce your waste. We live in a world that is defined by waste. We don’t think twice about what we as individuals contribute to the landfill. Start taking composting and recycling seriously. You’ll be happy to see that by buying and using less, you live more. Evaluate your garbage bin and see what you can eliminate. Start thinking of your contribution to the world rather than landfill.

Shop ethically. Did you know that the fashion industry pollutes more than any other industry next to oil? What you wear almost always contains toxins and chemicals, exploits workers, pollutes the air and uses resources that are not sustainable. Have a think: do your clothes represent you? It’s crucial that we begin thinking long and hard about our fashion choices, to make sure they are aligned with our values. Check out our previous blog for tips to go eco-chic.

Use less energy. Turn off your lights when you don’t need them. Switch to green and renewable energy when possible.

If you’re wondering how else you can get involved, and what you can do to save the planet, check out Earth Hour. Comment below to let us know what you think. What will you do this Earth Hour to help our planet? What actions will you take to show your love and support for our only and shared home?
