Natural Bathroom Cleaning Methods

Believe it or not, many common household cleaners contain a large amount of toxic chemicals that can be extremely harmful to children, pets and the environment. This means the same product you use to clean and disinfect your bathroom could be causing unwanted side effects and damage — something no one wants. That’s exactly why more and more households are looking for natural bathroom cleaning methods that both clean and keep everybody safe.

When you’re interested in cleaning your bathroom using natural products, the good news is that there are lots of effective options available today. Even better, many are made of items you already have on hand. If you’re interested in experimenting with some do-it-yourself cleaning options, all you need to know is what to use. Below, check out a few natural bathroom cleaning  methods and learn how to use natural bathroom cleaners you can feel better about cleaning:

  1. Baking soda and vinegar. When it comes to household uses, baking soda is a goldmine. This everyday ingredient deodorizes, removes stains and works against bacteria. Try combining a few tablespoons with a ¼ cup to a ½ cup of white vinegar and as much water as you need to create a sprayable solution. Afterward, you have a fast, simple, all-purpose cleaner you can use on everything from sinks to tile. For extra aroma and enjoyment, you could add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
  2. Grapefruit and kosher salt. Grapefruit offers more than a breakfast treat. When it comes to cleaning, a halved grapefruit sprinkled liberally with coarse kosher salt also becomes a useful tub cleaner. To use, wet the bathtub, sprinkle some salt around the bottom, and then use your salted grapefruit half to scrub the surfaces. You can use your grapefruit on the entire tub/shower, including its fixtures. Afterward, rinse the pulp, juice and salt to reveal a cleaner, citrus-smelling space.
  3. Vinegar and water. Shine your bathroom mirrors and windows with a homemade glass cleaner made of one part white vinegar to one part water. Stored in a spray bottle, this solution is easy to spread onto the surface and wipe away with clean cloths. In fact, this same solution can provide an all-purpose cleaner for tile, counters, cabinets and soap scum, too.
  4. Baking soda, washing soda and salt. Combine one part washing soda and one part coarse salt with two parts baking soda, and you have a scum-busting power cleaner for the tough, hard-to-tackle stains in your tub, sink or bathroom floors. As with many of the other natural cleaning options, you are free to add essential oils to spice up the scent. Sprinkle this mixture onto wet surfaces and scrub them clean with a sturdy brush. Then, all you have to do is rinse with water or vinegar to remove grime.
  5. Castile soap and fractionated coconut oil. You can quit spending money on hand soap when you create your own foaming wash with these two ingredients: Combine 2 tablespoons castile soap with 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil in a pump bottle, add essential oils as desired, and fill the rest with water. This creates a simple, fragrant hand wash that not only works well in a bathroom, but also can make a great gift.

When you care enough about your household to want to keep it safe, it only makes sense to go the extra mile with DIY bathroom cleaners. Ditch the toxins and potential harm that they can cause, and take control of the cleaners you use! The five ideas above are a great place to start, made of simple ingredients that are easy to find if you don’t already have them on hand. Whether you’re talking about a simple mixture of baking soda and vinegar or a homemade hand soap made from castile soap and fractionated coconut oil, you won’t regret using these natural bathroom cleaning methods.
